Nobody builds silos on purpose. That's not how it works.
It starts with self-protection. Some team needed information from another team and couldn't get it reliably. So they built their own version. A little redundant, sure, but at least they could control it. Another team saw a function that kept dropping the ball on handoffs, so they pulled that capability in-house. Also redundant. Also reliable.

Some of it is structural: different reporting lines, different incentive structures, different forums for cross-functional work. Some of it is behavioral: leaders who need to model collaboration instead of territorial defense. Some of it is just permission: making it okay to surface the friction instead of working around it.
The organizations that solve Silosolation describe a specific moment when it starts to turn. Usually it's the first time a cross-functional decision gets made cleanly, not through weeks of negotiation, but through a process that actually works. People notice.
